What is Tallow and Why is it in My Soap?

Tallow is a byproduct of the beef industry and often discarded. It is a product that offers many health benefits and should not be wasted. As a replacement for cooking oils and shortening, tallow adds flavor as well as nutrients like vitamins A, E, B-12 and K. It also has amino acids as well as Omega 3. So why is it in soap? The primary ingredient in soap is oils, mostly olive oil and coconut oil. By using tallow,  not only do I add a great source of vitamins to my skin care blends, I can also do my part to use a great product that would otherwise be wasted.

Vitamin A: cell regeneration, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, protects against sun damage.

Vitamin D: Protects against sun damage, improves elasticity and firmness to help prevent wrinkles. Sooth skin irritations like eczema and psoriasis. Aids in skin cell production

Vitamin E: antioxidant anti-inflammatory. May Help prevent some UV damage

Vitamin K:   can help reduce signs of aging, promotes wound healing, and protect against damage from free radicals.

Vitamin B12:  promotes cell growth and renewal.  Helps with collagen production and maintaining the skin's moisture balance. Reduce wrinkles.

Omega-3: Promotes collagen production to help maintain skins elasticity.

Choline: Promotes collagen production. May help minimize  wrinkles and fine lines. It may also help to improve skin texture.

Fatty Acids: Oleic acid fights free radicals that deplete collagen. Palmitoleic softens skin & improves barrier functions. Stearic acid repairs skin and improves flexibility.  Linoleic helps strengthen the skins barrier.

These characteristics make tallow a great ingredient for skin products from head to toe.

According to the NIH (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11193910/#sec3)

“Tallow was found to offer hydrating and moisturizing properties” and “ may be beneficial in helping with skin conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis, dry skin, and wounds.” They do warn that tallow can cause irritation, I personally have never come across anyone having this issue.

However, as always, when trying new skincare products always test for possible allergy issues by applying to small patch of skin first.
